Some experiences are difficult to put into words

yet still shape how you feel, respond, and relate.

What is Sandtray Therapy?

Sandtray is an experiential therapy that uses a tray of sand and symbolic objects to represent internal experiences.

It offers a reflective, nonverbal way to explore what is held beneath the surface, allowing meaning, emotion, and insight to emerge through imagery and placement.

Rather than relying on words alone, sandtray invites expression through symbols, movement, and spatial arrangement, engaging deeper emotional and relational processes. It can support access to experiences that are difficult to articulate, helping bring clarity, integration, and a sense of internal organization.

A Different Way of Working

Not everything needs to be explained to be understood.

Through the use of sand, objects, and imagery, sandtray creates space to explore:

  • Internal experiences that feel hard to access

  • Patterns that repeat without clear explanation

  • Emotions that are difficult to articulate

The process allows what is held internally to take form, often bringing clarity, distance, and shift.

Who This Is For

  • Children who struggle with verbal expression, emotional articulation, or word-finding, and benefit from play and experiential ways of communicating

  • You find that talking alone doesn’t fully capture what you’re experiencing or doesn’t lead to meaningful change

  • You sense there is more beneath the surface- emotionally, relationally, or somatically- that hasn’t fully been accessed or understood

  • You want to explore patterns in a different way, beyond analysis, to better understand how they are held and how they can shift

  • You are seeking a space where emotional experience can be met with curiosity, steadiness, and depth rather than urgency or problem-solving alone

What You May Notice

  • Greater clarity as thoughts and feelings are expressed through images, symbols, and placement rather than words alone

  • Access to experiences, emotions, or memories that are difficult to articulate verbally

  • A sense of emotional distance or safety when engaging with overwhelming material

  • New perspectives emerging as patterns become visible in a different, externalized way

  • Gradual, meaningful shifts in emotional responses, relational dynamics, and internal organization

  • Increased capacity for reflection, integration, and self-understanding over time

How I Work

We follow what emerges in the moment, allowing space for both awareness and integration without rushing interpretation or forcing meaning. Experiential approaches support processing at the level of the nervous system, helping experiences shift in a way that feels grounded and sustainable.

With sandtray therapy, this process becomes more visual and experiential. The sand and symbolic objects offer a way to externalize internal experiences, creating space to observe patterns, emotions, and relational dynamics from a different perspective. What emerges in the tray is explored gently and at your pace, often allowing insight and emotional shifts to unfold naturally through the process itself.

The focus remains on safety, regulation, and working with what is present, supporting change that is both meaningful and embodied.

Sometimes the most important work happens without words.

Sandtray supports that process.
